Overview

Canada is known for its substantial immigrant population and commitment to multiculturalism. Like many immigrants, we understand the struggles of keeping our home country's culture and language alive for our children and future generations. We've heard similar concerns from other immigrants and wanted to help.

Mission

Our mission is to support non-native English-speaking families in Ontario, Canada, by helping them pass down their mother tongue and cultural values to their children. We aim to make this process easy, engaging, affordable, and less challenging. We strive to create environments where children can practice and embrace their heritage languages and cultural identities while socializing with peers from similar linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This ensures they remain connected to their roots while thriving in an English-speaking region.

Solution

Our solution involves a mobile app for parents and children to join various community-based book and movie clubs in different languages. These clubs host regular virtual meetings with planned activities, creating an environment for kids to communicate and engage in the club's language. Competitions are organized to further encourage engagement and incentivize activities that improve language skills. These clubs provide platforms for both parents and kids to socialize and connect with others who share a passion for their language and culture.

User Research

First, we needed to verify our hypothesis, that maintaining the language of their homeland is a big concern for many immigrants. If this is true, as UX researchers and designers, we need a deep understanding of both parents' and children's experiences to create the best solution. We wanted to understand why keeping their homeland's language is important and what challenges, needs, and experiences both kids and parents face in this endeavour.

As we were targeting a broad audience who may have very different needs and experiences, we had to narrow down the target demographic to increase the efficiency and accuracy of our research and deliver a high-quality solution. Therefore, we focused on the young parents of immigrant families in Ontario who are between 30 and 45 years of age.

For this research, we employed a variety of methods to uncover the challenges and difficulties parents face, as well as opportunities for enhancing their experiences. These methods included:

1

Desk Research

2

Non-Participant Observation

3

Interviews

4

Qualitative Surveys

Key Findings

Parents goals for teaching their mother tongue to kids

  • Build and Maintain Strong Bonds
Especially for parents less fluent in English, using the mother tongue fosters deeper conversations and connections with their kids.
  • Share Cultural, Historical, and Religious Values
Particularly relevant for first-generation immigrant parents, teaching the mother tongue allows them to convey personal experiences and stories from their non-English-speaking homeland.
  • Develop Language as a Skill
Parents aim to equip their kids with the valuable skill of knowing another language, thereby expanding their potential opportunities.
  • Facilitate Communication with Non-English-Speaking Family Members
Enabling kids to communicate with relatives, such as grandparents, who are not fluent in English enhances family connections and relationships.

Challenges

  • Concerns about English Proficiency
Parents may be overly preoccupied with their children's English proficiency, diverting attention from teaching or maintaining proficiency in the mother tongue.
  • Parental Fluency in English
Lack of fluency in English poses challenges for parents when trying to teach their kids the mother tongue.
  • Misconceptions about Language Retention
Incorrect beliefs, such as assuming kids will naturally retain the mother tongue without effort, can hinder effective language teaching.
  • Busy Lifestyle
Parents' busy schedules may limit the time available for teaching the language to their kids.
  • Limited Access to Resources
Difficulty accessing resources like books or movies due to high costs, scarcity, lack of variety, limited choices, and outdated materials.
  • Exhaustion from Constant Observation and Correction
The effort of consistently observing and correcting kids during language teaching can be physically and mentally exhausting for parents.
  • Kid's Resistance to Learning
Children may resist learning due to a lack of understanding of the language's value or simply as a form of disobedience.
  • Differences in Learning Speed
Each child varies in terms of how quickly and easily they can grasp a new language, posing individualized challenges for parents.

Definition & Synthesis

Based on the research findings, we created a user persona and a journey map of the parents. Subsequently, we developed a mood board encapsulating everything we have learned.

User Persona

an AI generated illustration of a young mother's portrait, representing the user persona of the project.
Kathy

Mother of two bilingual kids in her 30s who immigrated to Canada and now lives in the GTA.

Aware: Sees the value in preserving & developing her mother tongue in her kids, constantly looking for new ways to do it.

Goals

  • Building and maintaining a strong bond with the children while also conveying a part of her identity to them.
  • Sharing cultural, historical, and religious values and wisdom with her children.
  • Creating more opportunities for her children in an ever-changing world by providing them with another language.
  • Maintaining children's connection with their roots by providing an opportunity to communicate with their grandparents regularly.
  • Providing the opportunity to understand art and culture more profoundly (books, music, movies, etc.).

Needs

  • Environment and routines where children can grasp non-casualvocabulary. This environment should be separate from the family/parents and managed by professionals.
  • Reducing stress and family conflicts around preserving the mother tongue.
  • Opportunity to support children's interests and passions using their mother tongue, adding value and motivation to the learning process.
  • Encouragement and support from a school’s side.
  • Access and popularization of trustworthy resources and information about multilingualism.
  • Language communities, activities, and events offer meaningful and high-quality learning experiences.
  • Improved and easier access to books and other resources (games, movies, etc.) in her mother tongue.

Attitudes

  • Learning and preserving the mother tongue requires regular efforts from her side. Kids do not always support these efforts as they may not realize the value. This negatively impacts the family environment.
  • Finding something that the child is really into and supporting this interest in the mother tongue helps to eliminate the resistance component and demonstrates that the language may hold value for the child.
  • Multilingualism is a way to train a new skill and develop children's minds.

Actions & Behaviours

  • Rule: children should speak their mother tongue at home!
  • Formal and informal education in the language she wants to preserve.
(daycare, language classes, books, songs, movies, etc.).
  • Incentive system. She realizes it's not a perfect solution, but it helps create a routine, encourage her kids, and yield results.

A mood board displaying various images that represent different aspects of family, culture, and language learning. It includes diverse elements such as kids with grandparents, children reading in a club, traditional cultural festivities, various language scripts, children engaging in social activities and technology, kids playing video games, parents bonding with children, and the challenges of language barriers. There are also images depicting family moments, the use of mobile applications, and parents dealing with disobedience and exhaustion. The board visually represents the themes of family connection, cultural diversity, and language learning.

Brainstorming Solutions

Following the mood board, we engaged in a brainstorming session to explore potential solutions:

Proposed Solution

Platform: Mobile App

Description:A book and cinema club designed for children of various ages within the same language community. They would convene regularly online to discuss books and movies in their native language. The app would also facilitate connections between the kids and their parents, encouraging discussions on various topics and the sharing of experiences.

Additional Features:

  1. A social section for both parents and kids, fostering interaction among club members.
  2. Multiple clubs catering to different age groups and subscriptions to various streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc.).
  3. An incentive system with features like stars and points for children.
  4. Online competitions and quizzes, complete with associated prizes, to gamify the experience and make it more entertaining.
  5. A calendar to keep track of schedules, competition days, theme days, etc.

User Testing

We asked participants and experts to review our low-fidelity prototype and engage with it.Some of the most constructive feedback we received included:

  • Disable user search, especially considering that individuals who have not signed up for the app could otherwise search for users.
  • Remove all unnecessary personal information (e.g., age).
  • Keep filter and sort buttons always available.
  • Consider who can conduct online meetings and what safeguards are in place to protect children.

High Fidelity Prototypes

Based on the valuable feedback we received form usability testing and the existing low-fidelity design, we developed our high-fidelity prototype. Some examples are shown below:
